Debuts of Jessica Lang Dance and Rosie Kay Dance, and the return of Dorrance Dance

In 2019 San Francisco Performances presents three dance companies performing ballet, contemporary tap, and modern dance.

UK-based modern dance company Rosie Kay Dance performs 5 Soldiers, an exploration of war. Artistic Director Rosie Kay created this work after she joined The 4th Battalion The Rifles for two weeks and experienced full battle exercise. Kay then visited a military rehabilitation center to see the effects of conflict and training on the soldiers' bodies. As the audience sees the intimate training the soldiers undertake to prepare for the sheer physicality of combat, they come to see the soldiers as humans and individuals.

New York City based Jessica Lang Dance  draws equally from modern dance and ballet, transforming and redefining movement with stunning visuals and emotional engagement.

Also from New York City, Dorrance Dance returns to San Francisco Performances with a signature, high energy work in which the performers use "tap instruments" created by Nicholas Young not only to dance, but to create live music.
